Sri Lanka’s economy is progressing upwards, boosted by two major ongoing infrastructure projects. A significant beneficiary of Sri Lanka’s rapid economic development over the phase of the last seven years, the construction sector has expanded by more than 20% and the industry has grown twice as fast as the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The first project is the Central Expressway project, Sri Lanka’s biggest infrastructure project, projected to cost a total of US$2.8 billion. The Expressway is a 99km long highway, linking two major cities, Colombo and Kandy and purposed to shorten travelling time from over three hours to just one hour. Construction of the expressway is currently underway in four stages and is estimated to be completed by end of 2019.

The second major project is the Ruwanpura Expressway, also known as the Ratnapura Expressway, Sri Lanka’s Sixth E Class Highway. The 73.9km long highway will link the Kahathuduwa exit on the Southern Expressway with Pelmadulla, a major city in the Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka. Under the Recommendations of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management, the Ruwanpura Expressway Project is divided into four sections, depending on the nature of the works involved, it is expected to be completed in 2021.
